OBIT: War Dead of County Increases: Previously Missing, Cpl. Vancil Shear is Reported Killed.
Previously reported missing Tech. Fifth Grade Vancil Keith Shear of Cove Rt. 1 has been reported killed in action in France Feb. 16th.
In the first message received concerning the 25 year old infantryman since Feb. 28 when they were advised that he was missing in action since Feb. 16. Mr. and Mrs. Sampson Shear of Cove Rt. 1 in Hamilton Township were advised by the War Department Friday that their son's death had occurred on that date.
A pre-Pearl Harbor volunteer, Cpl. Shear had been overseas since Nov. 15, 1944 and was fighting with the Seventh Army in France. The last letter received by relatives was dated Feb. 14 from somewhere in France but gave no indication of what he was doing.
Cpl. Shear was born Nov. 4, 1919 near the Glade community in Scioto Co., attended the Riegel school and was a student for one year in Jackson High School before joining the CCC, in which he served 18 mos. before enlisting in the army June 1941. He received training at Camp Colain, California, Fort Bliss, Texas, Seattle, Washington, and in Mississippi before being sent overseas.
Never married, he is survived by his parents, six brothers & four sisters: Ora Shear of South Charleston, Elmer Shear of Urbana, Mrs. Mae Downey & Mrs. Maude Allen of Sciotoville Rt. 2 1/2, Mrs. Annie Surran of Portsmouth Rt. 1, Henry and Orma Shear of Minford, Harold Shear of Sciotoville Rt. 2 and Mrs. Mary Cochran of Oak Hill Rt. 3.
A sister and two brothers preceded him in death.
