Lima South High Biology Teacher Killed In Crash

Miss Hattie Joseph Dies In Hospital At Montpelier

Fatally injured in a two-car collision near Montpelier, Miss Hattie Pearl Joseph, 64, Lima South high school teacher, died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in Montpelier hospital.

Death was due to a skull fracture, Dr. P. Waid, Williams-co coroner, said.

The accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the junction of Routes 20-A and 15, about three miles east of Montpelier.

Williams-co sheriff's deputies said Miss Joseph's car, northbound on Route 15, failed to stop for a stop sign and was rammed by a westbound car driven by Ned Stipe, 27, West Unity. Stipe escaped with minor bruises, deputies said.

Miss Joseph apparently was injured fatally when she was thrown from the car by the impact of the collision, deputies said.

Born in Perry-tp July 20, 1889, Miss Joseph attended Bluffton college and Ohio Northern university before receiving her B.A. degree from Manchester college, North Manchester, Ind., in 1927.

She taught in Bath-tp district schools from 1909 until 1925, in Bluffton from 1925 to 1927, and in Pioneer from 1927 to 1929.

She was biology teacher at South high school from 1929 until her death. She held a life certificate to teach in Ohio.

Miss Joseph made a tour of Europe and the Holy Land in 1930.

She was a member of the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren and the Chatauqua Study club.

Surviving are two brothers, Jesse J., Ada, and Elmer J., McComb, who is superintendent of schools in Hancock-co; five sisters, Mrs. Carrie Hawkins, 600 S. Scott-st, Mrs. Anna Taflinger, 421 S. Dewey-av, Mrs. Linnie Driver, Ft. Wayne, Ind., Mrs. Emma St. John, Pioneer, and Mrs. Sara White, Nappanee, Ind., and 14 nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Edgar Petry will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Paul Thompson. Burial will be in Lewis Grove cemetery, near the church. The body will remain in the Chiles and Son funeral home, where friends may call.
