Civil War veteran. Company B, 70th Illinois Infantry (3 months)

Maj. Lincoln K. DuBois, son of the first Republican auditor of Illinois and brother of former United States Senator Fred T. DuBois, of Idaho, died yesterday afternoon at his home in Hinsdale. For many years Lincoln DuBois was a familiar figure in the life of Springfield. He resided here until a few years ago, when he went to Hinsdale to make his home with a grand niece, Mrs. Agnes Huntington. He had been in excellent health until quite recently.

The body will arrive from Hinsdale on the Chicago & Alton railway and services will be conducted under the direction of Stephenson Post, Grand Army of the Republic, of which Major DuBois was a former officer. Interment will be at Oak Ridge cemetery where other members of the family are buried.

Major DuBois is survived by his brother, Fred T. DuBois, who resides in Washington, D. C., and one sister, Mrs. Eliza DuBois Briscoe; his niece, Mrs. Susan DuBois Cochran, and his grandniece.

Lincoln DuBois was the first child named for Abraham Lincoln. He was born in 1846 at Lawrenceville. His father, Jesse Kilgore DuBois, was then interested in politics and he was among the earliest to note the greatness of Lincoln, of whom he was an ardent admirer. When, in 1856, Mr. DuBois was elected auditor by the newly formed Republican party he came to Springfield with his family. Shortly after his arrival he and his little son met Lincoln, and the father mentioned that this was the boy named for Mr. Lincoln. Lincoln leaned over and took the little fellow by the hand. "Well, bub," he said, "it was a close call between you and "Slickey" Green's bull calf as to which was first named for me." "Slickey" Green was a Petersburg banker, William Green, who was one of Mr. Lincoln's friends. His choice of the name Lincoln, for a particularly awkward young calf was one of the standing jokes of the period, and Lincoln greatly enjoyed it.

Young DuBois went to the Springfield public schools and to the Illinois Industrial university, which he attended with Robert Lincoln and other Springfield youths. He was a soldier in the Civil war and later was active as a member of the state militia. He served as a member of the legislature from Cook county, 1874-1876, and took an interested part in politics. He was a personal friend of Governor John R. Tanner and when the latter broke with United States Shelby M. Cullom, he was one of the directing forces in the Tanner campaign for United States senator.

Major DuBois was one of the prominent Republicans who espoused the silver cause. His brother, Senator Fred DuBois, Idaho, who led the silver forces in the national convention in 1896, had his encouragement and advice. However, Major DuBois' Republicanism was stronger than his convictions regarding the double standard. He voted for William McKinley.

Major DuBois as a young man was one of the supporters of Richard Yates, the war governor. When the latter's son aspired to the governorship, Lincoln DuBois supported him. He was a prominent figure, too, in the historic deadlock convention which nominated Charles S. Deneen for governor.

DuBois was a man of commanding physique, fine mind and excellent education. He was capable of attaining high distinction for himself, politically, but practically all his life was spent in the service of others. He was greatly interested in the career of his brilliant younger brother. The later years of his life in Springfield were devoted largely in personal charitable work.
