Sarah was the widow of James Montaudevert (1754-1791), who was born in France as Jacques Marie Ripaud de Montaudevert. He was the son of Jacques Louis Ripaud de Montaudevert (1726-1791), and the brother of Francois Fidele Ripaud de Montaudevert or Couteau (1755-1814) a famous privateer in the Indian Ocean. James was a merchant who sold goods brought by ship to New York City. He died in a shipwreck off the Bay of Penzance in 1791, leaving Sarah with four children: Marie (Mary), born June 30, 1785; Sara, born November 1786; Juliette (Julia), born July 17, 1788; and Jacques-Louis (James), born April 18, 1790.
