Benijah Lloyd Jr. was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania on 3/17/1825. He was the second son born to Benijah and Elizabeth (Dunn) Lloyd. Their family was among the early settlers of Mercer county. (There is a sketch of Benijah Lloyd in the 1882 Mercer County History)

Benijah was 10 years old when his family left Pennsylvania and headed for Mercer County, Illinois in 1835. The family settled just North of the Edwards River in what would become Millersburg Township. Benijah was educated in pioneer schools.

He married Arrelda Jane Willits on 12/9/1847 in Mercer County, Illinois. Arrelda was born 8/4/1828 in Richmond, Indiana. She was the daughter of Dr. Mark and Harriotte (Fox) Willits, Mark Willits was another early settler of Mercer County.

After his marriage Benijah engaged in farming which he successfully followed untill the fall of 1856, when he was elected Sheriff of Mercer County. He then relocated to Keithsburg, which was the county seat at that time. At the end of his official term, in 1859, he returned to his farm in Millersburg, but in 1860 moved to Keithsburg where he lived out the remainder of his life where He enjoyed the respect and esteem of his many friends. He was also a saloon keeper in the 1860's but Mercer County did not look kindly on the trade of liquor so he must have went back to farming because in the 1870 census his occupation in listed as farmer.

" A table of officials of Keithsburg Township shows that Benijah Lloyd served as Supervisor from 1871 to 1881. He had also served as Assessor in Millersburg Township in 1854 at the same time his brother David was Supervisor."

Benijah and Arrelda (Willits) Lloyd had children: Arthur Lloyd (b. 1849, d. bef 1860); Omer H. Lloyd (b. abt 1851); Ella Lloyd (b. abt 1852); Nettie Lloyd (b. abt 1855); Charles M.
