Mr. Berger was born March 4, 1892 in Sheboygan, son of the late William and Minnie Weswether (sic) Berger. He attended elementary schools in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth High School. He taught school in the town of Mosel for four years and then attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated with a B.A. degree in Education and later taught at the University.
He married the former Mattie Lorfeld of Meeme, June 2, 1917. For three years he was principal of Howard Grove School and then County Superintenent of Schools for Sheboygan County for 12 years. He was a supervising teacher in Washigton County schools for two years and then for 20 years taught school in and around Madison. He retired in 1958 and during the past year moved to Spring Valley. He was a member of St. John Lodge of Sheboygan Falls and of Sheboygan Council no. 38.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Dr. Walter Jr of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Georgine Wild of Baton Rouge, La. and Miss Evelyn Berger of Boston, Mass.; sister, Mrs. Alma Sparks of Milwaukee and eight grandchildren. Friends may call at Walter Ahrens Funeral Home at Howards Grove from 2 p.m. Wednesday until 11 a.m. Thursday when the body will be moved to the church to lie in state until the hour of service. A memorial fund has been established.
