David was a farmer his whole life. He was known by his relatives and friends as "Uncle Daves". The Gilland/Gilliland name change occurred when David and his brother Lewis went to the bank to ask for a loan, the bank officer asked how to spell their last name and they answered, "Just like it sounds". Today their descendants are known as "Gilland".
David is buried with his wife, children, parents, and various relatives. His granite slab was cracked by a nearby tree that fell on his grave during a storm.
