Morrison was the eldest child and son born to Peter Groom and Martha Ann (Shoemaker). He married Sarah Elizabeth Haight on May 1870 in Crescent City, Del Norte, CA. To this union thirteen children were born; Morrison, Emma, Thomas Theodore, Infant Groom, Olive "Ollie" G., Lucie, Owen Albert, Ida May, Ruth Rhea, Mary, Bessie Eva, and Cora Peggy.

Morrison moved to CA. as a young man to escape life with his stepfather where he married Sarah. He later moved to and settled in Whoop 'em up Gulch, near Waitsburg, WA in the 1870s.

Morrison is buried with his beloved wife and life partner, Sarah.
