Joseph was born in Louisiana. When he was a few years old, his family moved to Indian Creek, Monroe, Missouri where he spend the rest of his youth. He was one of 7 brothers and 3 sisters.
When the Civil War broke out, he and 2 of his brothers-James and Robert-all joined the 1st Northeast Missouri Calvary Regiment, Company D.

After the war, he traveled to California with his extended family which included his mother and families of his brother, Thomas, and sister, Elizabeth Buckman, as well as other relatives. Another brother, William had been in California since the gold rush and Joseph was living with him in 1870 and in 1900. In 1880, he is listed as being blind and was living with his youngest brother, Richard. He was granted bounty land near his brothers. He died near Hopland on March 17, 1901.
