Frank P. Coon, 86, Who Knew Lincoln, Claimed by Death - Frank P. Coon, North Eighth street, one of the few surviving persons who knew Abraham Lincoln, died at 1:30 a.m. today at Springfield hospital. He was 86 years old. Mr. Coon enetered the hospital Sunday as a medical patient.

He was the son of Reuben Coon, pioneer Springfield shoemaker, who made Lincoln's boots. Frank Coon was born in Springfield in 1853, and resided here most of his life, although for some years he lived in Chicago. As a boy he often saw Lincoln in his father's shoe store, as the elder Coon and Lincoln were close friends.

"The last time I saw Lincoln," Mr. Coon recalled recently, "was when he walked between his two sons, Bob and Tad, to the Great Western depot (now the Wabash freight station) to board the train for Washington. I was about 8 years old then." Mr. Coon often told the story about his father winning a silk hat from his grandfather in a bet on the election of Lincoln to the presidency.

Surviving Mr. Coon are a son, Garland Coon, Chicago, and two grandchildren.

Publ. in Illinois State Journal, Springfield, IL, 1-4-1940, p. 1
