Susan was raised along the Susquehanna River in Tunkhannock, PA. She moved to Delaware Co, OH with her husband Abraham. Later Abraham and Susan moved to Coles Co, IL with their son Charles Patrick.

Susan comes from a long line of Irish spinners. She would raise flax and then spin it into linen fabric which she sold. Her fabrics were in demand enough that she was able to purchase a buggy for her family.

Susan had a keen interest in politics as her husband would read from the newspaper to her as she was working to create her fabrics. She was known to be able to debate her beliefs quite skillfully. However, Susan never learned to read or write.

She raised 10 children, two sons and eight daughters. It was her intent to marry her daughters to successful men, which she managed to do.

Benjamin Harrison Taylor married her second daughter Zerua. When Zerua died in 1827, at the age of 22, he married her third daughter Maranda.

Joel Smith Stevens married her fifth daughter Maria. When Maria died in 1840, at the age of 26, he married her sixth daughter Sophronia.

The only one of her children that did not live to maturity was her daughter, Calista, who died at 15 years of age.
