James Woodrow Carleton, 84, died Monday, April 29, 2002 at Knox Center For Long Term Care in Rockland. Born in Stockton Springs, June 8, 1917, he was the son of Morton L. and Vivian Titcomb Carleton. He was raised in Winterport where he attended schools. Mr. Carleton worked on the family farm until entering the Army in 1941. He served 4 ½ years as a member of the 103rd Infantry Division with most of his service in the Pacific Islands. Returning to civilian life, he moved to Vinalhaven where he met and married Olga Marion MacDonald.
Mr. Carleton was a member of the Union Church, where he served several years as a deacon and usher. He was a Past Commander and 53 year member of member of the Woodcock-Cassie-Coombs, American Legion Post #18 of Vinalhaven.

Mr. Carleton was pre-deceased by his wife in 1996, brothers Floyd and Burleigh, one sister, Virginia Carleton Shoppee and a granddaughter, Victoria Carleton. He is survived by one son, Donald Carleton and his wife Freda of Vinalhaven; three daughters, Gail Polk and her husband Charles of Warren and Florida, Beth White and her fiancé Barry Ames of Union, Nancy Carver and her husband Bruce of Wiscasset; one brother Lloyd of Kissimmee, FL; four sisters, Hilda Allen of Topsham, June Calderwood of Owls Head, Winotta Reynolds of Hermon, Marion Ryan of Winterport; eight grandchildren, Ronald Osgood, Brian Osgood and his wife Lisa, Gregory Polk and his wife Cindy, Thomas White and his wife Michelle, Cecil White, Jr., James Caughlan and his wife Cynthia, Donna Prentice and her husband Dick, Jessica Carleton; eight great-grandchildren, Brianna Osgood, Brandon Osgood, Jake Caughlan, Zachary Caughlan, Amanda White, Abbigail White, Hannah White, Angelique White; a sister-in-law Edith MacDonald Jordan and her husband Kenneth as well as many nieces and nephews.
