Russell B. Arthur

Russell Blaine Arthur, 86, of 167 Polls Branch, Shady Spring, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at his home following a long illness.

Born Aug. 7, 1910, at Pear, he was the son of Oliver J. Blaine and Bessie Smith Arthur.

Mr. Arthur was of the Baptist faith, a coal miner, timber man, and was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways.

He was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran having served in Okinawa, Japan.

He was preceded in death by three sons, Wendell, Willard, and an infant son; two sisters, Nerma McDaniel and Eva Fox; and two brothers, George F. and Henry Arthur.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, M. Marie Bragg Arthur; three sons, Harold Arthur and wife, Kathy, of Brunswick, Ohio, Dale Arthur and wife, Ethel, of Richmond, Va., and Robert L. Arthur and wife, Teresa, of Richmond, Va; four daughters, Shirley Crawford and her husband, Franklin (Dee), of Ghent, Loretta (Sue) Bragg and husband, Robert K., of Jumping Branch, Sharon Bragg and husband, Donald, of Shady Spring, and Debra Farley and husband, Thomas, of Cool Ridge; his mother-in-law, Bertie Meadows of Shady Spring; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Meadows of Shady Spring; a brother, Ernest Arthur and his wife, Gladys, of Rupert; three sisters, Edith Garten and her husband, Herman, of Beckley, Beatrice Wriston of Oak Hill, and Helen Bragg and her husband, Charles, of Shady Spring; 26 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Rev. Mcrae Keaton officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodson Cemetery No. 1, at Bragg.

Friends may call 5 p. m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 4326 at Sophia-Midway.

Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.
