After finishing school in the Lone Oak Community, he began working at Southland Sales.
In 1942, he was inducted into the US Navy and served in the South Pacific. Her returned home in 1945 as Chief Petty officer.
He was owner / operator of Schlegel Service Station for over 30 years, retiring in 1982. He received several awards from Texaco for exemplary service.
He served on the Olney City Council from 1972-1978. He was honored "Outstanding Citizen" in 1991. He was a member of the VFW and Rotary Club in Olney. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and served the church in many positions of leadership.
He and Juanita Phillips married 8 June 1941. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in June 2001.
Survived by his wife; one daughter - Penny Kelly and husband Kevin of Carrolton; one brother - Norbert Schlegel of Meridian; two sisters - Leola Seedig and Leah Philipp, both of Olney; two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter - Judy Kay Schlegel and four brothers - Harold, Wilbert, Harvey and Richard Schlegel.
