Alvin was the oldest of nine children born to his parents, Henry John and Wilhelmina (Konrad) Hahn.

Alvin graduated from Texas A & M University in 1942. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.

During World War II, Alvin served in the U.S. Army as a drill instructor and Sergeant of Guard.

Alvin was a farmer and rancher in Calhoun County, Texas. He raised cotton, grain sorghum, corn, rice, and cattle.

Alvin was active in his community. He was a board member of many organizations, especially those involving conservation of land, water, and soil. He was also a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Port Lavaca.

Alvin married Hanna Witte in 1942. By 1948, they were living in Port Lavaca, Texas, where they lived out their lives. They had five children, two sons and three daughters. They had eleven grandchildren, and -- as of 2010 -- seven great grandchildren.

Note:
In 1990, a family source reported that Alvin was born in Westhoff, Texas. However, Alvin's obituary lists his birthplace as Nordheim. Seven month's before his birth, in the 1920 census, Alvin's parents were living in Justice Precinct 3, DeWitt County, Texas.
