Esther was the granddaughter of Jacob and Margaretha Spyr Haehlen. She was likely named after her sister Esther Mae, who died at the age of three months. Esther's parents were both immigrants.

Her father became a minister when she was about two years old after having worked as a lithographer in Chicago. Once a minister, the family moved to small towns in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, where her father would minister to two or three small churches.

Esther married Edward Melchoir Miller, a minister, on July 14, 1921 in St. Paul, MN, where her parents were living at the time. They had two children, Lowell Edward Miller and Marian Elizabeth Miller.
