Maria was born near the village of Lenk, in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland. Church records show that the family had lived there for several generations. When Mary was 4 years old, the family moved to Diemitgen for 8 years, then to Saanen, before heading to America. In 1880 the family boarded the S.S. Saint Laurent. Upon arriving in New York, they went directly to Chicago and lived on the near North Side of Chicago called Lake View.
She married David Hauk on September 26, 1889 in Chicago. Their first three children were born there. After David entered the ministry, their remaining children were born in the small towns where David was serving.
