John Peter was born in Rheydt, a borough of Mönchengladbach, in present-day Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. He arrived in America in May of 1849 with his parents and siblings; he filed his Declaration of Intention for Naturalization on 01 April 1851.

There is a partial biography on John, in the publication "History of Manitowoc County Wisconsin", by Dr. L. Falge, 1911-1912, v.2, p.49-50. This partial biography contains minor discrepancies and errors, which will be noted in the next paragraph. "John P. and Sophie Stuempges, who emigrated to the United States from Germany. Upon their arrival in this country in 1847, they first located at Newton, Wisconsin, where the father engaged in farming. Later he withdrew from agricultural pursuits and engaged in the operation of a sawmill and he also sold trees. He was always loyal in his allegiance to the land of his adoption and served as a private in the Twenty-seventh Wisconsin Regiment during the Civil war, being honorably discharged at the close of hostilities. Both he and his wife passed their latter years in Manitowoc, the mother's death occurring in 1888, and the father's on the 28th of March, 1911. They were buried in Evergreen cemetery."

Errors in biography:
*John Peter Stuempges and wife Sophia Stueck (his second wife) did not immigrate to America together. John's first wife was Katharina Sprengling, and they were married in Newton, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin on 06 Oct 1859.
*As stated above, John Peter was married to Katharina Sprengling and then later Sophia Stueck. No mention is made in the biography of John Peter's third marriage on 26 March 1889 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, to Johanna Ratsatz. Johanna died only several months after John Peter.

John Peter was a private in Company D of the 13th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. He was drafted in Newton, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin to Company D, Wisconsin 13th Infantry Regiment on 30 Sep 1864 and mustered out on 13 Jun 1865.
