Winfield Scott Royce was the son of Nellie Olivia (Burkhart) Royce and George Scott Royce of Albany, Linn County, Oregon, born on July 2nd, 1885. His father passed away from TB when he was only five years old. His mother remarried in July, 1891 to Mr. William Baker and they had a little girl, his half-sister, Pearl Laura Baker, in 1895. Unfortunately, Mr.Baker was a carriage maker and also died of TB, in 1900, when "Winnie", as he was affectionately called, was only 15 years old and his little sister was only 5 years old. He started working for Western Union at an early age and received the telegraph notice of the San Francisco Earthquake on April 18th, 1906. He told his little sister, Pearl (age 11 yrs.) who went running down the front streets of Albany, yelling out the news of the quake, but at 1st no one would believe her as she was a child. It was only later in the day that she was finally vindicated. Winnie lived with his mother and sister until his sister married in 1914. Then just with his mother until at least 1920, per U.S.Census. He worked with Western Union for over 20 years, ending with the title of Manager in Albany, Oregon. He married Deanna Marie (Franke) Royce, whom he had met in California, in 1923 and they had one child, Mary Lucille. They were living there when the family had a reunion of Leander's living children and their children in 1926, held at Will and Mayme Burkhart's home. He continued working at Western Union and was eventually promoted to manager and his wife Dena worked as a telephone operator until at least 1940 when the last Census was taken. I don't know when they went back to California, although I believe it may have been after his mother went to live with his married half sister, Pearl Laura and her husband, Harry H.Taylor. His last known address was 1919 W. 7th St., Los Angeles, CA. He died June 17, 1957 collapsing while at work as an elevator operator at the Orpheum Theatre and dying from a heart attack just a couple of weeks before his 70th birthday. He was cremated at Restland Memorial Park which changed ownership a few times. His remains are at Pierce Brothers, Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, Los Angeles County, CA. He is in the Mausoleum of Remembrance. Thank you to Mr. Bernie Palomineo for the above information. According to the CA Death Index, Dena (Deanna, his wife) died on Feb 24, 1973 in Los Angeles County, CA. The whereabouts of his wife's remains are unknown. The whereabouts of his daughter, Mary Lucille, are also unknown. I would appreciate any information regarding Deanna Marie Royce and/or Mary Lucille Royce. Please use the edit tab on this memorial and just type in Winfield Royce's name under "Subject", then tell me what you've learned about Deanna or Mary Lucille, if possible. It would mean a great deal to me. Thank you very much.
