Joseph Felske's death certificate shows that he was born in Sheinfelt, Germany, and his parents were Rose Schlum and John Felske. Joseph Felske migrated to the U.S. during 1886. His name first appears in the Chicago City Directory 1896, when he was living at 280 W 12th Place. Joseph was a Brewery Forman for the Ruehl Brothers Brewery, in Chicago, Illinois.

Joseph married Katherine Walter on November 21, 1897 at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Chicago, IL. At the time of their marriage, Katie has a son, Edward Walters, who was born on September 8, 1885.

Joseph and Katie had four children together: Joseph G; Catherine; John A; and Rose Felske. Rosie Klauser and John Langbauer were the god-parents for the Felske children. John Langbauer worked at the same brewery with Joseph Felske and his step-son, Edward Walters.
