Longtime Staten Islander Vera Cooney, 91, of West Brighton, a homemaker and former secretary, died Friday at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.

Born Vera Whalen in Mineville, New York, she moved to New Brighton at age eighteen, then to Westerleigh a year or two later. Ms. Cooney settled in West Brighton in 1949 after marrying Dermot (Dutch) Cooney.

Mrs. Cooney worked for about ten years as a secretary for Procter & Gamble at its former Port Ivory plant before leaving to start a family.

A parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton, Mrs. Cooney also was a member of St. Monica's Mother's Guild of Sacred Heart School.

She enjoyed going to school dances.

"She loved being around family and her grandchildren," said her daughter, Barbara Geissler. "She found a silver lining in everything."

Mrs. Cooney's husband of thirty-three years, Dermot, died in 1982. Her son, Robert, died in 2008.

Surviving, in addition to her daughter, Barbara, are four sons, James, John, Joseph, and Thomas; two daughters, Susan Mahon and Mary Beth Cooney; her brother, Phil Whalen; her sister, Sophie Mikowas; seventeen grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, both in West Brighton.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
