Ralph A. Young died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Hospice Care Center. He was 90 years of age.

Ralph was born July 14, 1920 in a small farmhouse near Otis, Colorado. The son of Birdsall Sr. and Opal Young, Ralph was the eldest of eight children. While attending Colorado State University, he met Helen Claudon, whom he married and with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage.

Ralph was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Field Artillery in Holland and Germany.

He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Colorado State University; a Master's Degree from Kansas State University and a PhD from Cornell University, all in he field of agronomy, primarily soil science.

Ralph served as an instructor at Kansas State, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at North Dakota State University. Ralph moved to Reno, Nevada and was a Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and was promoted to Department Chairman. He later accepted a position as Associate Director of the Agricultural Research Program in the State of Nevada.

After retirement in 1985, Ralph and Helen traveled extensively. In 1989, they moved back to their home state of Colorado.

Ralph was active in the AARP Tax-aide Program for 20 years, was a master gardener for the Extension Service and was very active in the Lions Clubs in Reno and the Redlands in Grand Junction.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Fay Axsom and Lorainne Perry; and by his loving wife, Helen, who passed away February 28, 2011.

Survivors include three sisters: Evelyn Whisman, Lovernne Brown and Ila Miller; two brothers: Birdsall (Birdie) Young and Vernon Young, all of eastern Colorado; his son, Gregg (Elizabeth) Young, of Salt Lake City, UT; a daughter, Gayle (John) Hoover, of Rochester, NY; and two grandchildren: Matthew Hoover and Erica Hoover.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 25 at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary at 3:00 p.m.
