Mary Hawk was born on a farm north of Effingham, KS, and attended school there. She later learned dressmaking in Atchison and continued that profession until her marriage. She married James Robert Foster on January 26, 1910, in Atchison, KS. They later resided in the Monrovia community.
Mary didn't have a lot of money, but she had a lot of love to share with her husband and family of 8 children. The cookie jar was never empty for the grandchildren. Mary was a hard working farm lady and found time to make many of the dress clothes the children wore including dresses for the girls and suits for the boys. Few Sundays got by without Mary and the children attending Sunday School and Church. She saw to it that all her children earned a high school education. She was always firm with her children and always fair. Bad language was not to be tolerated.
Mary always planned a large garden and a cellar full of canned meat, fruit, and vegetables was stored for the winter. She was a wonderful cook. Bread was made at least 3 times each week and every morning biscuits were baked from scratch for breakfast. Mary raised a large flock of chickens for meat and eggs, ducks and geese for meat and feathers, and turkeys to raise for selling. The turkeys were dressed at Thanksgiving time to sell and buy clothes for Christmas.
Mary was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Sunny Hill Thimble Club, WSCS and the Extension Club. She also worked as the Monrovia correspondent for the Atchison Daily Globe.
Mary suffered in the later years, but loved life and seldom complained. Mary loved to talk and visit and when her sisters and brothers came to visit a good time was had by all. Mary died of cancer at home.
