South Carolina Governor. After graduating from the College of New Jersey in 1812, he was a cotton plantation owner, president of the South Carolina Agricultural Society for many years and a trustee of South Carolina College. He was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives (1814-29), a member of the South Carolina Senate (1826-34) and the 36th Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina (1834-36). In 1848, he was elected as a Democrat the 63rd Governor of South Carolina, serving until 1850. After leaving office, he was a member of the Southern Rights Convention in 1852 and managed his plantation until his death.
