Theron Metcalf was from a Massachusetts family. He earned a Bachelors degree in 1805 and, subsequently, a degree of law from Brown. From 1837 to 1843 he served as Secretary to the Brown Corporation. He became a justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts in 1848, remaining in that role until 1865. Metcalf was actively involved with Brown as a fellow until 1853.
