Alex Gershowitz, 78, passed away Monday, May 14, 2007 at his home in Brownsville.

He was born in San Antonio, Texas, of Russian immigrant parents, Morris and Bessie Gershowitz on August 16, 1922.

Affectionately known as Alex the Junkman throughout Southwest Texas, he was recognized as an expert in the recycling industry. He was known for his generosity, exceptional sense of humor and his ability to find unique ‘treasures'. He was a 50 year member of B'nai Brith International and received the Century Club Award for his dedication.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia Sommer Gershowitz, his children Gerald and Martin Gershowitz and Arlene Sonnen. He was blessed with five grandchildren, Seth, Bess and Hannah Gershowitz and Joshua and Daniel Solomon. He is also survived by his sister Reva Cohen and numerous loving relatives.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 am at the Hebrew Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gerald, Marvin and Sara Gershowitz and Joshua, Jon and Daniel Sonnen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Beth El, 24 Cove Way, Brownsville, TX 78521.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Darling Mouser Funeral Home, 546-7111.
