When Moses FALWELL was born on August 31, 1803, in Virginia, his father, Elisha, was 26 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 24. He is the oldest child born into this family.

Moses married Sarah Sally ALFORD on November 20, 1838, in Marshall County, Tennessee, when he was 35 years old and they had six children together: Mary Elizabeth, Elisha L., Martha M., William Thomas, and James "Jim" Taylor, and an infant son whose birth and death is unknown.

His wife, Sarah, passed away on September 12, 1848, in Marshall County, Tennessee, at the age of 38. They had been married 9 years. Their baby boy is buried next to his mother in the Sheffield Cemetery. It is possible that Sarah's untimely death was due to childbirth of the infant son as she was very young.

He then married Martha (ALFORD) Williams on April 14, 1855, in Marshall County, Tennessee, when he was 51 years old. Martha was a sister to Moses' late wife, Sarah. She was living in his household on the 1850 U.S. Census record after his wife Sarah's death. Martha had a young daughter named Margaret Jane Williams. According to family stories, she was the biological daughter of Moses. Her death certificate shows her father's name as Moses Falwell. According to DNA matches to me from Margaret Jane's descendants, I have found this to be true. On August 21, 1856, Moses and Martha had another daughter named Sarah L. Falwell.

Moses FALWELL was living in Tennessee in 1862 during the American Civil War. Moses' brother William H. died on December 27, 1863, in Panola County, Texas, from wounds suffered while fighting in the war. Also, Moses' son, William Thomas Falwell, died in 1864 from wounds he suffered from this war. Moses had two others sons that fought in the Civil War, but they returned home, married and raised families of their own. It must have been a very difficult time for Moses to have all three of his sons away fighting in the war. They were all in the Confederacy.

Moses died on May 18, 1868, in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, at the age of 64, and was buried there on his property in the Fallwell Cemetery.
