Iner Carlson was the son of Gustaf Carlson and Hilma Gustafson. They emigrated from Sweden to Wisconsin in 1889. They had 6 children of whom Iner was the second. Gustaf worked as a commercial fisherman and drowned in Lake Superior in 1907.

Iner met his future wife, Ula Inez Clements in Hartville, Ohio. They were married in Massillon, Ohio in February, 1918. They had three children, Norman, Erma and James.

Iner suffered ill health for most of his adult life, first with debilitating thyroid disease, that required several surgeries. He was an early patient of Dr. Krile, the physician who founded The Cleveland Clinic. Shortly after Iner's thyroid issues were resolved he developed the stomach cancer that claimed his life in 1945 at age 45.

Their infant son, James, who lived only two months, sleeps in the grave with his father.
