James Petrik was an American Patriot who served during World War II, and lost his life in action while serving in the Philippines on Leyte Island. Three of James brothers also served in WWII.

James Petrik was born January 13, 1920, at Geddes, South Dakota to John (who was born in South Dakota) and Mary Petrik (who was born in Czechoslovakia)/ He was the eighth of twelve children. He had six brothers: Edward, Chub, Joe, John, Paul, and Leonard, who preceded James in death. He also had five sisters: Mary, Josephine, Elsie, Helen, and Betty.

James worked on the farm near Patricia, where he had moved with his family in 1931.

James is remembered by his family as a kind, hard-working, young man. The Petrik family "were very musical and played for many dances, especially at Long Valley, South Dakota, for a lot of house parties."

James Petrik entered the service on March 7, 1942, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He was sent overseas in May of 1943. On October 20, 1944, Pfc. James Petrik was killed in action at Leyte Island in the Philippines. He was killed while running ashore from a landing boat to Leyte Island.
