He married Arlene Nusser on October 11, 1944 after he returned from the Pacific and World War II. After a few years in California, they returned to their home community in Kansas. In 1955, they moved to Washington state.
After retirement, Orvis' hobbies were baking, woodworking, and his computer. These hobbies gave him many hours of enjoyment.
Arlene preceded Orvis in death in February 1987.
In 1990, he married Janice Wells, who preceded him in death in 1998.
Also, preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Vybert and Paul and two sisters, Edith Sunley and Doris McPhail.
He was survived by a son and daughter-in-law, a granddaughter and her husband, two sisters, as well as many nieces and nephews.
