Gladys Hurst Carey, 83 years, 7 months, and 25 days, passed away Tuesday morning, June 28th, at the Hutchinson Hospital after a long illness.

Born November 3, 1893 to John and Matilda Cole, she was married to Bert Hurst on September 20, 1914 in Ness City, Kansas. They moved from Bazine to Ness City where she remained a resident for over 26 years. They had three sons and four daughters. Bert Hurst passed away March 7, 1970. Mrs. Hurst was then remarried on September 14, 1972 to John Carey of Hutchinson and she lived the remainder of her life there.

She was saved when she was 16 and joined the First Baptist Church at Ness City shortly after moving there.

Survivors include the widower of the homw; sons, Vybert of Ulysses, Kansas, Orvis of Hayward, California, and Paul; daughters, Mrs. Cecil (Edith) Sunley of Dodge City, Kansas, Mrs. Miles (Doris) McPhail of Norman, Oklahoma, Mrs. Clarence (Fern) Heffel of Mesa, Arizona, and Mrs. Chuck (Fayetta) Ditzenberger of Espanola, New Mexico; four stepsons, Estel, Clarence, and Lenel Carey all of Hutchison, Kansas and Charles of Chicago, Illinois, Joe Floyd of Nickerson, Kansas; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Sybil Ridge and Letha Frazier of Hutchinson, and Mrs. Marlene Barth of Tulsa, Oklahoma; fifteen grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, 14 step-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, friends, and family.

She was preceded in death by two granddaughters, one great-grandson, three brothers, four sisters, and her mother and father.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her life was filled with love for her sons and daughters, their wives and husbands and her grandchildren. She was a proud and loving great-grandmother, too. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her.
