PROMINENT ESSEX BANKER DEAD
BEDFAST SINCE LAST FALL, PRESIDENT OF COMMERCIAL NATIONAL BANK
Abraham Lindburg, one of the most prominent and respected citizens of Essex and Page County, passed away Thursday evening after a lingering illness of six months. Mr. Lindburg was 86 years old last January 1. Born in Sweden, he emigrated to America in the summer of 1863 and first settled in Henry County, Illinois. There he remained until 1870, when he came to Page county, Iowa and first located in Douglas Township. He was married in Sweden October 10, 1861, to Miss Johanna Wallin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Swan Wallin. Seven children were born to them, five of them living and are Mrs. Sofie Hanson, Mary, George, Arthur, and Mrs. Selma Abraham, all of whom are living near Essex.
One sister, Mrs. John Wallin of Stanton, also survives.
Mr. Lindburg left Douglas Township in 1893 and moved to Essex where he remained until his death. He was one of the organizers of the Commercial National Bank and always took an active part in its welfare, being one of its directors and the last ten years he serves as its president.
He was very active as a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Essex. When the new church was erected five years ago, Mr. Lindburg purchased the bell and presented it to the congregation at the cost of $1,500 as a memorial of his late wife Johanna Wallin Lindburg.
Mr. Lindburg had lived a long and useful life. He endured the hardships of the early pioneer and therefore saw this country from its early inception and its development into one of the wealthiest communities in the middle west. Mr. Lindburg will be greatly missed by his relatives and friends, which are numerous. Shortly before the death of his wife in May 12, 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Lindburg celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Mrs. Lindburg was a sister of John, Henry, and Ben Wallin of Stanton, and Mrs. John Lindburg of Omaha.
The funeral of Mr. Lindburg was held at the home in Essex at 2 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, followed by services at the St. John’s Lutheran Church at 2:30. Both services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. J. A. Holmen. The service at the home and the obituary read at the church were in Swedish.
The pall bearers were Ruben and Roy Lindburg, Ruel Abraham, grandsons, Lowell Falk, Arvid Hart, and Alfred Wallin, husbands of three granddaughters.
