During WWI, Henry was drafted into the Navy, and put to work shoveling coal into large furnaces "in the belly of the ship." Henry said it was a "horrible, back-breaking" task, and "the boiler room was hotter than Hell."
Henry saw live combat. At one point a German ship bombarded Henry's ship with "Mustard Gas". Henry was seriously poisoned, and suffered related health problems for the remainder of his life.
When he returned from the war he married his first wife, Mary Stecher, who had a son, Edward Rogal, who is often mistaken as Henry's biological son. After Mary died in 1937, Henry married Jennie Mack, a neighbor and Widow.
Henry and Jennue were married until her death.
Henry is buried alongside his first wife, Mary Stecher. He did not have children with either of his wives.
