Melvin L. Diem, forty, Myerstown R2, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the General Hospital of injuries suffered Saturday in a tractor accident on his Lebanon County farm.

Diem, a native of Lancaster County, had just finished baling straw. He was backing the tractor and baler into the barn when the tractor axle broke and the brakes failed.

The tractor and baler started down the incline and as they gained momentum, Diem leaped from the tractor, landing on his back. The tractor went over a six-foot retaining wall. He was taken to the Lebanon Sanatorium and then transferred to the General hospital Sunday.

An autopsy will be performed at the hospital to determine the cause of death.

he was born in Earl Twp., a son of Oscar Diem, Bareville R1, and the late Mary Snader Diem. He was a member of the Myerstown Mennonite Church.

In addition to his father and wife, the former Arlene Wilson, surviving are these children, Evelyn Mae, melvin, Jr., Roy Ervin, James Robert, Thelma Jean, Donald Jay, Ronald Lee and Carl Eugene Diem, all at home.

Also surviving are four brothers, Clarence Diem, Myerstown R3; Aaron and Lloyd Diem, both of Bareville R1, and Arthur Diem, Ephrata R2.
