Chester Donaldson was the son of John Chester Donaldson and Mary McCord Smith and the husband of 1) Edith Levy Maduro. After his first wife's death he married 2) Henrietta 'Retta' Johnson, widow of Joseph Millard Delmore.
Chester was a senior diplomat to Latin America, a lawyer, and a military engineer. He was a graduate of Hamilton College and as his first career taught mathematics at several schools. Then he became a lawyer and military engineer. He served as Chief Engineer and advisor to the President of Nicaragua. Then he was appointed by the U.S. President as Consul to Nicaragua, and then later as Consul to Costa Rica.
