Leander S. Schmitz, 78, of 2157 Railroad St., New Holstein, died Saturday, June 16, at Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein.
Mr. Schmitz was born Jan. 25, 1912 in St. Joe, Fond du Lac County, son of the late John and Louise Simon Schmitz.
He attended schools in St. Joe and farmed in the area for 13 years. In 1951 he moved to New Holstein and was an inspector at Tecumseh Products for 27 years, retiring in 1977.
On May 24, 1938, he married Angelita Berenz in St. Cloud. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1988. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein.
Survivors are his wife, three sons, Robert (Sandra Strassman) of Franklin, WI; Vernon F. (Diane Wagner), New Holstein; Francis (Barbara Reiss), New Holstein; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Anna Schmitz Dietz, New Holstein; 11 grandchildren, Larry, Jim, Jeff and Tammy Diets, Sherrie Dietz Scharenbroch, Corinne, Brian, Kelly, Todd, Brigette and Timothy Schmitz; and also one great granddaughter, Allison Marie Dietz.
He is also survived by one brother, William, Milwaukee; one sister, Mrs. Martha (Gregor) Morgan, Fond du Lac, one sister-in-law, Ermina Schmitz, Mount Calvary.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Clemens; and one son-in-law, Harvey Dietz.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein with the Rev. Monsignor Peter Klauck officiating. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
