PORTAGE – Doris A. Schleicher, 82, of Portage, died peacefully at her residence on Nov. 19, 2012, following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Doris was born in Caledonia Township on Sept. 29, 1930, the sixth child of Thomas and Agnes Ramsay. She was married to Donald Schleicher of Portage in 1949.

Doris loved the rural life; she grew up on the family farm and lived most of her adult life in her own home in the Caledonia hills. She loved doing chores on the farm, gardening, cooking, welcoming family and working around her home. Doris was employed as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Baraboo until her retirement in 1998.

She was a lifelong member of Caledonia Presbyterian Church and she was active in church life until her illness. She was generous with time and talents; everyone remembers Doris as a person who would do anything for anyone at anytime of need, as well as a baker of perfect pies.

Doris is survived by her children, Donald Schleicher (Polly) of Eau Claire, Joanne Nerenz (Tim) of Germantown and Bradenton, Fla., Michael Schleicher of Portage, and Jean Ott (Joe) of Bradenton; and by her grandchildren, Erik Nerenz of Baraboo, Sam and Katie Schleicher of Eau Claire, and Hannah and Caden Ott of Bradenton, Jade Schleicher of Portage along with her mother Laura Mattei.

She is also survived by her sisters Agnes James, of Pardeeville, Margaret Ramsay of Portage, Marian McMahon of Portage, Billie Utesch (Dale) of Tomah, Beth Hitchcock (Jim) of Rockville, Md., and her sister-in-law Ruth Evans, of Portage.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald Schleicher, her brother Ronald Ramsay and her brother Ellsworth Ramsay.

A memorial reception for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 29 at Caledonia Presbyterian Church. The memorial service officiated by Rev. Paula Bremer will be held at noon. A luncheon will be held at the church, followed by an inurnment ceremony at Shanks Cemetery in Caledonia Township.

The family suggests memorial gifts in the name of Doris A. Schleicher be directed to Caledonia Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer's Foundation of Wisconsin. They wish to thank Heritage House and SouthernCare Hospice for the loving care provided to Doris in her last years, and to Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home for support during this most difficult of times.
