Grant Ulysses Taylor

Grant Ulysses Taylor was born May 6, 1901, in Pineville, Bell County, KY, to Theodocia "Docia" (Taylor) Taylor, recent widow of the late Ulysses Grant Taylor,
murdered by a relative in an ambush in August 1900. He was the ninth child of his family. His mother later married Jessie "Jess" Brock, adding four more children to the family, and had two additional children with William Mills, who was married to her niece, Millie (Taylor) Mills, and worked on her farm.

He died in Beckley, WV at the Veterans Administration Hospital on May 29, 1979, following a series of illnesses over several years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I in Europe where he suffered mustard gas poisoning and shrapnel wounds. He entered the military service early, giving his date of birth as two years earlier, in order to become eligible to serve his country.

After WW I, he worked in the shipyards in VA and for the coal mining companies in WV. He eventually worked for the coal mining company as a coal miner and a carpenter. His adopted son, William Ransome Taylor, became a casualty at the mine in Wyco, WV, in 1951. One of his sons-in-law, James Edward "Freck" Elliott, who worked for the East Gulf Coal Company was badly injured in several coal mining accidents.

Grant later served twenty years as justice of the peace of Wyoming County, WV, and worked for the Beverage Control industry for WV.

On June 2, 1925, he married Mary Ellen Wickline, daughter of Thomas Thumb Wickline and Rachel Elizabeth (Lauderback/Louderback) Wickline in Pineville, Wyoming County, WV. Mary Ellen worked at the boarding house her mother operated in Corrine, WV, where Grant had made her acquaintance.

Grant claimed he only had a fourth grade education, but taught himself to use the typewriter, read legal documents, blueprints and maps. He had a life-long fascination with real estate and real estate transactions that affected his family.
His family moved frequently in various towns in Wyoming County, but finally settled in Allen Junction, WV, where Grant eventually purchased the school house at auction for his large family of eleven children. As a carpenter, he was called upon to help build the original Welton Chapel in Allen Junction, WV.

Most of his children attended Mullens High School, Mullens, WV. Four sons and a son-in-law served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during World War II, Korean War, and Viet Nam War. Four sons and a son-in-law worked in the coal mines as coal miners, carpenters, and foremen. One son worked for the VA Hospital following his discharge from military service. This same son helped build the Isaiah Hart Bridge in Jacksonville, FL. His ninth child, Grover Robert Taylor, served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War, where he was killed in action. The bridge in Allen Junction, WV, is named in his honor. One daughter became a beautician. One son and two daughters became educators, and two worked in Christian ministry, after completing college and post-graduate studies. One daughter worked in retail sales before becoming a full-time homemaker. One son-in-law became a high school guidance counselor and later worked in real estate. Occupations of his grandchildren included educators, psychologists, attorney, banking consultant, financial services, computer science engineer, human resources supervisor, newspaper editor, retail sales and Christian service ministries.
