William first arrived in California from Nova Scotia in 1877. He probably came with his older brother, John James Cruickshans. The 1881 Canada census indicates both he and John returned to Nova Scotia. In any event, William became a naturalized US citizen on September 3, 1888.
In 1890 William married Nancy Adaline Caulkins. The couple had five children:
Frederick William Cruickshanks 1890-1945
Ralph Howard Cruickshanks 1891-1977
Ellenor Cruickshanks 1893-1982
Gilbert Delos Cruickshanks 1894-1972
Mabel Luella Cruickshanks 1901-1984
William was a produce farmer in South Fork and later in Briceland in Humboldt county, CA. From at least 1900 to 1910, his brother John was living with William and his family.
In about 1923 William, his wife Nancy plus possibly one or two of their children, moved to Santa Rosa, CA.
William died in 1927. Nancy died nine years later. They are both buried in the Santa Rosa Odd Fellows Cemetery.
