Charles was the 3 year old son of Grace (Jack) and Benjamin D. Ellett. His maternal grandparents were Ann (Robbinson) and Charles Jack and paternal were Mary (Anderson) and Benjamin Ellett.


Charles' mother Grace died on October 15, 1850 at the young age of 30, leaving three living children. Besides Charles, his brother Henry also proceeded her in death. His brother Charles D. died soon after their mother and little Grace Elizabeth died 10 months after her. Only one sister, Mary Jack lived to adulthood.
