In 1870 he, his father, step-mother, six siblings, and his paternal grandparents lived in Coopersdale, PA. His father worked as an engineer at a mill.
In 1880 he, his father, step-mother, four of his siblings, and a cousin, 19-year-old Mary Peterson, lived in probably the same place. His father worked as a water tender in an iron rail mill, he in a brickyard, and Jacob as an engineer for a railroad. Mary was also enumerated with her parents in Jenner Township, Somerset County, PA.
In 1900 he and his wife and their seven children lived in a house they were renting at 179 Grant Street in Johnstown, PA. He worked as an engineer.
In 1910 he and Anna and six of their children--all but Ida and Gertrude--lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, at 227 Cooper Avenue in Johnstown. He worked as a foreman for a railroad, Leonard as a locomotive engineer, and James as a machinist at a steel works.
In 1920 he and his wife and four of their children lived in the same house. He and Leonard worked as locomotive engineers for a steam railroad, and Albert as a timekeeper at a steel works.
