In 1870 he, his father, step-mother, six siblings, and his paternal grandparents lived in Coopersdale, PA. His father worked as an engineer at a mill.

In 1880 he, his father, step-mother, four of his siblings, and a cousin, 19-year-old Mary Peterson, lived in probably the same place. His father worked as a water tender in an iron rail mill, William in a brickyard, and he as an engineer for a railroad. Mary was also enumerated with her parents in Jenner Township, Somerset County, PA.

In 1900 he and his wife and their two daughters lived in a house they owned, with a mortgage, at 120 Grant Street (renamed Boyer Street by 1910) in Johnstown, PA. He worked as a foreman for a railroad.

In 1910 he and Lizzie and their three children lived there. He worked as a foreman for a railroad, and Maud as a bookkeeper at a brick works.
