Zachariah "Rial" was the third child of John and Frances "Fannie" Nance Briant/Bryant. His father John, was said to be Cherokee or part Cherokee and his mother, French Huguenot. They were early settlers of Gibson County. It appears John and Fannie lived a quiet life and farmed the land for a living. There they raised Rial and his 14 siblings. Their names can be seen in the attached picture of a monument that has been privately erected in Poplar Springs Cemetery in the family's honor.

Zachariah married Elizabeth "Betsey" Goodwin in Union Co., S.C., around 1814 - 1816. They had 5 boys and 5 girls together and they are:

Zachariah Ryle, Jr. Bryant 1818 – 1891
John Bryant 1820 - aft 1850
David Bryant 1822 – 1873
Martha Elizabeth Bryant 1825 – 1830
Giles H. Bryant 1827 – 1914
Mary Ann Bryant Bishop 1829 – 1886
Sandal Bryant 1832 – aft 1900
George Washington Bryant 1834 – 1919
Amanda D. Bryant Fullerton 1830 – 1880
Ellen Jane Bryant Bradford 1839 – 1922

They moved to Gibson County between 1820 and 1830 according to the Census Records I've found. Elizabeth "Betsey" died in Nov 1839 during or shortly after the birth of Ellen Jane, her last child. All the children in this family are Betsey's except Frances who is the daughter of Zachariah and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Bradford Bryant.

Zachariah "Rial" Bryant married Elizabeth A. Floyd, 9 Jan 1840, in Gibson Co., TN. They had one child, a daughter:

Frances L. Bryant Newhouse Allen 1842 – 1910

Elizabeth A. Bradford Bryant - Rial's second wife, died between 1850 and 1858.

In 1858, Zachariah "Rial" Bryant married his third Elizabeth. Her name was :

Elizabeth Burges McMullen Bishop, (pronounced "Burgess), and she was the widow of Brinkley Bishop. They married in Carroll County, TN, 19 Nov 1858. They had no children other than the ones they had with previous spouse or spouses in Rial's case. They also shared some of their grandchildren as several of each of their children had married each other years before they married.

Rial died at age 70 years leaving many Bryant men to come who would be named Zachariah, Zachary, Zac, Rial, Ryle, and/or Ryal. A long legacy and many generations of namesakes.

As seen in the headstone photo, curtesy of Jere Cox, the stones in Bryant Cemetery have been broken and destroyed. As of 2012, there are no pieces of this headstone left. It is believed both Ryle's first two wives named Elizabeth are in this cemetery as per Jere Cox. I have a photo from a family member, Jere Cox, of the broken headstone pieces for an "Elizabeth Bryant" and this is supposedly for the first wife, Elizabeth Goodwin, but the pieces with the dates are not there.

Zachariah is somewhat of a leader in his family. It appears he led the way from South Carolina to Tennessee for several of his family members and relatives. He helped several along the way to establish themselves with obtaining land and certainly took care of his children before, during, and after their marriages. Two of his daughters - Mary Ann and Frances, were very young widows with children and they moved themselves and their children back home with him until they could get back on their feet and marry a second time. He appears to have given direction to all his children and many grandchildren and thus he was a type of Patriarch in this line of Bryants or so that is how I see him and is my personal opinion. He was surely an interesting man. Note that he did in fact, marry three brides named Elizabeth. If this bio does not clarify them feel free to email the author and manager at her attached email on her FAG page.

In memory of your long legacy - rest peacefully my Gx3 grandfather....

NOTE: There is no data to verify burial location of Rial's parents John Bryant, Sr. and wife Frances "Fannie" Nance. However, the Poplar Springs Cemetery site was chosen for the monument to this family because of many of John and Fannie's children being buried in Poplar Springs. The final resting places of John & Frances Bryant could also be Poplar Springs but proof of the actual site remains unknown.
