He was the son of Henry Back and Susannah Maggard. He was born along the Poor Fork, in Harlan County, Kentucky. He married Frances Blair, on March 30, 1843.

Despite what was inscribed on a "memorial marker" that was put there around 1998, by members of "The Back-Bach Genealogical Society," he was NOT the grandson of Henry Back, who died in Virginia in 1809, and who was married to Elizabeth Hoffman (daughter of John Hoffman and Maia Sabina Folg). Therefore, he was not the third Henry in the line, and so he was not "Henry III."

He was actually the grandson of Joseph Back, who died in Harlan County, Kentucky in 1819. And he was the son of Henry Back, who was a son of Joseph Back. Therefore, he was actually a "Jr.," not a "III."

He was actually Henry Back JR. (not Henry Back III).

Elizabeth Back (born 1-13-1844)--she married Wilson Whitaker. She died in 1877 and he got remarried to Mary Ann "Polly" Caudill on 3-17-1882.

Susannah Back (born 12-18-1845)--she married John Adams

Mary "Polly" Back (born 10-27-1847)--died young

Easter Back (born 2-11-1849)--died young

Sarah Back (born 7-18-1852)--died young

Lucinda Back (born 10-11-1853)--she married James Frazier

Rebecca Back (born 12-23-1855)--she married John Preston Blair

John P. Back (born 2-6-1858)--he married Georgia Ann Polley

Ellender Back (born 5-20-1861)--she was blind, and probably died sometime between 1880 and 1900

His father, Henry Back, was the son of Joseph Back and Elizabeth Hoffman-Maggard. This has been fully researched and documented by Board-Certified genealogists.

It should also be noted that he was listed in the 1880 Census Report, however, he died in 1877. Listing someone on a census report, a few years after they died, was sometimes done, out of respect by family members.
