William J. Hemb, 72 of Cleveland, a retired cheesemaker, died late Friday night at the Manitowoc Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 12, 1896 in the Town of Centerville, a son of the late George and Rosalie (Jerszski) Hemb. On April 10, 1918 he married Miss Martha Zimmermann at St. John's United Church of Christ at Schwartzwald.
Mr. Hemb had taken a dairy short course at the University of Wisconsin in 1916 and was employed by Pauly and Pauly Cheese Co. for 32 years. In his capacity as cheesemaker, he worked for Pauly and Pauly at Millhome, Osmond, Manistique, Michigan and Marinette.
Retiring in 1962, he and his wife permanently moved to Cleveland. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1968. Mr. Hemb was a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ in the Town of Mosel.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Vera Tesnow, Manitowoc, and Mrs. Wilbur (Caroline) Goeke, Cleveland; two sons, Norbert, Green Bay and William Jr., Milwaukee; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Karstaedt, Osmond, and Mrs. John Goedeke, Sheboygan.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's UCC with the Rev. Kenneth Schultz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Knollwood Memorial Garden.
