Mr Charles William Keatley died at the home of his son, Mr Geo W Keatley, near Neponset, Summers county, on Wednesday, Jan 30, 1918, at 9 o'clock am. He had been a sufferer from Bright's disease but had rallied last fall. His last illness was of about three weeks' duration. Mr Keatley was a son of James and Caroline Keatley of Junta, Summers county (formerly Monroe) and was born July 5, 1853. On Aug 16, 1877 he was married to Miss Juritta Ballard, a daughter of the late Billie Ballard. She preceded him to the grave some 11 years ago. To this union were reared 7 sons and 3 daughters - Messrs Geo W, Rufus, Erastus, Frank P of Summers and Monroe counties; C O of Rich Creek, Va; Dorsey T of Tralee, Wyoming county; and Gus Keatley a soldier in the aviation service (who came home to be with his father in the latter's last hours); Mrs Ora K Heslep, wife of Mr C O Heslep and Miss Jessie Keatley of Peterstown, all of whom are living. His daughter May, the first wife of Mr Heslep, died in 1915. Some years ago Mr Keatley married Mrs Mary Davis of union who also preceded him to the grave. Some 30 years ago Mr Keatley became a member of the Church of Christ, lived a consistent life and was not afraid to die. He was a quiet, useful man, diligent in business, patient in sorrow, and loyal to his duty as he saw it. The funeral took place Thursday, the 31st, the services being conducted by his pastor, Rev C P Ellison, assisted by Rev Henry Dillon of the Baptist church, after which the remains of the deceased were laid to rest in the cemetery adjacent to Red Sulphur church near Ballard, the presence of a large assemblage of people attesting the high esteem in which he was held by his neighbors and friends.
His pastor writes:" The highest tribute which can be paid any earthly existence was paid Mr Keatley when it was said of him, 'He was a good Christian man.'"
He is survived by two brothers and three sisters.
