Sister Eugene (Julia) DeGrand, St. Francis Convent, Green Bay, died early Thursday morning, June 2, 2011, at a Green Bay hospital.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1927, daughter of Edward and Margaret (Pirlot) DeGrand, in Sugar Bush, Wis. She entered St. Francis

Convent in September of 1944 and was received into the Congregation in August of 1945. Sister Eugene celebrated her Silver Jubilee of Religious Life in July, 1970, her Golden Jubilee in August, 1995 and her Diamond Jubilee in September, 2005.

Sister Eugene served her Sisters as homemaker at St. Matthew, Allouez, St. John the Baptist, Howard, St. Kilian, New Franken, St. Joan of Arc, Goodman, Holy Angels, Darboy, Our Lady of Good Help Chapel, Robinsonville, the McCormick Memorial Home, Allouez, and St. Francis Convent. Sister also served as a Hospice volunteer. Her kindness to the suffering, both Hospice patients and their families, and those who came to The Chapel seeking comfort and prayers, was greatly appreciated.

Sister Eugene is survived by four sisters, Margaret (Emil) Witek, Green Bay; Cecelia Zellner, Luxemburg; Laverne (Joseph) Kanugh, Manitowoc; Dolores (Norman) Peters, New Franken; and a sister-in-law, Marcella Van Lanen, Green Bay; many nieces and nephews; and the Sisters and Associates of her Congregation, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross.

Sister Eugene was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Margaret; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry, Norman, and Elmer and Leona DeGrand; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Robert Van De Hei, Rose and Peter Heezen, Mary and Antone Drobeck, and Agnes and Wilbert Hazaert; brothers-in-law, Michael Zellner and Jacob VanVenRoy.

Family and friends may call at St. Francis Convent, 3110 Nicolet Drive, Green Bay, on Friday (today) June 3, at 4 p.m. for the reception of the body and visitation until 8 p.m. The Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday. Visitation for Sr. Eugene will continue on Saturday, June 4, at Holy Cross Church, 3009 Bay Settlement Road, from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Timothy Shillcox, O. Praem., presiding. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Bay Settlement.
