Born the third of eight children to William Etley and Mary Cubbler, he married Martha McIntyre in 1857. They had six children. He was a butcher by trade. He signed his Philadelphia Last Will & Testament Nov. 8, two days before he died. There's an article in the July 2, 1889, Philadelphia Inquirer about William's horse, which was pulling his butcher wagon, running wild at the Callowhill Street Bridge and injuring William, listed as 55 yrs of 2909 Dauphin St, William Pettit 28 yrs of 2009 Norris St, and E. F. Colebridge 60 yrs of 2509 Dauphin.
