U.S. Senator. He was the Brigadier General of Indiana State Militia, Sheriff of Franklin County and the common pleas court, (1811-20) and register of the U.S. Land Office at Brockville, (1820-30). In 1831, he was appointed as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Noble, serving until 1832. After leaving the Senate, he was a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, (1832-33, 36-39), contractor for national roads in 1835 and served in the Indiana State Senate, (1842-46). While walking along the railroad track in Indianapolis, he was hit and instantly killed by a train locomotive at age 72.
