Eldest of eight children born to George Robbin Lawrence & Anna May Moehrle. A butcher, like his father and ancestors before him, by trade. He owned his own butcher shop, having a small slaughter house at the end of the driveway next to his home and a store in the basement at 1121 Poplar Street in Parkland, Pennsylvania. Later he had his brother Philip build a cinder block building in the lot to the right of his home in which he set up a new slaughter house and store in front in the 1950's.

When Ed was younger he could play the piano by ear and he once held a job at the Penndel movie theater as a piano player for silent movies there.

His middle initial W. supposedly didn't stand for anything however the family was closely associated with Edward Wartman, a butcher in the early 1800's in Philadelphia and the initial likely stood for Wartman. Also Edward's grandfather Edward Lawrence was likely named after Edward Wartman.
